Mandarin is one of Jacksonville’s largest and most established neighborhoods, occupying the peninsula along the St. Johns River south of the Southbank and directly across the river from Orange Park. Once its own small riverside town built around citrus groves, Mandarin was absorbed into the City of Jacksonville in the 20th century but has kept a distinct, tree-canopied identity that spans everything from 1970s ranch subdivisions to riverfront estates in Old Mandarin.

About Mandarin

Mandarin takes its name from the mandarin orange groves that once covered the area; author Harriet Beecher Stowe wintered here and wrote about the citrus-covered riverbanks. The Church of Our Saviour, a Florida Carpenter Gothic chapel dating to the 1880s, still stands on the riverbank (rebuilt after Hurricane Dora in 1964 using salvaged original pieces), and Walter Jones Historical Park preserves the neighborhood’s past with a historic post office and museum. Today Mandarin is a large, largely suburban area made up of dozens of individual subdivisions built from the 1970s through today, anchored by San Jose Blvd and Mandarin Road, with a band of premier riverfront homes along the St. Johns River in Old Mandarin.
